In the fifties Frank Sinatra, Perry Como and Bing Crosby were common fare. Then came Black Gospel and Blues. There was a revolution called Rock and Roll brewing, but even those singers were older and cleaner in appearance. The influences of Gospel, Blues and what came to be called Soul music shared their influence across music lines, appealing to whites, blacks, country and other music categories. Then came Elvis, Motown and the British Invasion. Suddenly our tastes changed, our dancing changed and our movies and television changed. We were exposed to the music of other countries. We saw different inspirations, different lifestyles and different clothes. Fashion took a turn. Hairstyles were modified and the look of the 50's was out. Meanwhile, in garages, basements and clubs throughout the world, young musicians began playing different beats and expressing things that previously had only been implied in music. And even more amazing, the group that played next door one week, appeared on Ed Sullivan the next. New styles of music, new instrument combinations and new religious influences totally changed what music meant to the world. Help us preserve that early music, relive the times and capture the creativity. Relive those intense and sweaty Saturday nights. Support the Sixties Museum.
